A series of unusually violent thunderstorms are tearing their way across central and south western Saskatchewan and leaving meteorologists baffled and worried for the safety of local residents. So far, the storms have resulted in the destruction of an industrial park outside of Saskatoon as well as extensive damage to the farming community of Warman just north of the city. Though no deaths have been reported, the storms have knocked out power to parts of Saskatoon and sparked at least two tornadoes in the region. Torrential rain is being blamed for severe flooding east of Saskatoon and has city officials worried that the South Saskatchewan River may overflow it’s banks.
Officials with Environment Canada admit that the size and severity of the storms have taken them by surprise. “We didn’t expect to see this type of violent weather so early in the summer months” said meteorologist Leo Patterson. “Usually a storm system this concentrated will blow itself out after a day or two” he commented. “But in this case, the system just keeps gaining strength and we’re keeping a close watch on how things will transpire over the next 24 hours.”
The RCMP has closed-off sections of the Yellowhead Highway leading into Saskatoon because of flooding and a Tornado Watch remains in effect for the entire region. City officials, meanwhile, are urging residents to stay indoors and to stock up on supplies in case of an emergency. The storms are expected to intensify over the coming days.
